ABSTRACT

One hundred and thirteen cases of intestinal atresia had been treated in the University Children Hospital, University of Alexandria in the period between 1978 to 1993. Of these, 76 were males and 37 females. Their age ranged between one day and 40 days with an average mean of 5.8 days. The types of atresia were duodenal in 24, jejunal in 15, ileal in 52, colonic in 14 and multiple in 8 cases. All types were encountered from the mere diaphragm to the complete separated and multiple atresia. Associated anomalies were encountered in 25 cases. All cases were managed as soon as diagnosed. Primary end to back anastomosis was done in 86 cases. Double enterostomy was done in 26 cases and chimney anastomosis in one case. Postoperative hyperalimentation was needed in 20 cases. The survivors were 31. Mortality, early and late accounted for 69. Thirteen patients were lost from the follow-up. The causes of death were sepsis, leak, respiratory failure, cardiac failure, disseminated intravascular coagulopathies and electrolytes imbalance

ABSTRACT

In the period from 1978 to 1988, 250 patients with different degrees of hypospadias had been operated upon. Of these, 188 cases were treated by one-stage operation [OSR]. The different one-stage repairs are reviewed and the results are compared in terms of complications and the needs for reoperation

ABSTRACT

Three hundred cases of intussusception were subjected to a trial of hydrostatic reduction using saline enema and sonographic guidance. The age of these cases ranged from 4 months to 1 year and males were predominating females. The duration of symptoms ranged for several hours to 3 days. Of these cases 60% were successfully reduced. The remaining cases were successfully reduced. The remaining cases were treated operatively. This method of treatment of intussusception hydrostatically using saline and guided by ultrasonography, is safe, easy within the trained h and s and reduced the period of hospitalization

ABSTRACT

Between the period from 1974 to 1991, the number of cases of intestinal intussusception presented to the Pediatric Surgical Unit of Alexandria University, amounted to 915. The analysis of sex incidence gave a male to female ratio of 1: 0.55. The seasonal incidence showed a peak in spring. The analysis of the management whether conservative by hydrostatic barium or ultrasound saline reduction, or by surgery yielded the success rates, morbidity and mortality shown in the text. The advent of noninvasive ultrasound guided saline hydrostatic reduction changed the outcome and management plan of intussusception as well as the prognosis
